Wondering what to wear to Diwali in Melbourne? Choose something festive, comfortable and true to you. Traditional Indian clothing is warmly welcomed, but it is not required. A colourful everyday outfit is equally suitable for Melbourne Diwali. Whatever you wear, add comfortable shoes and bring a layer for the evening.

Melbourne Diwali takes place at Marvel Stadium Square in Docklands on Saturday 31 October 2026, from 2pm to 10pm. It is a free public festival, so your outfit needs to work for walking, food stalls, crowds and an open-sided venue over several hours—not for a formal seated function.

Is there a dress code for Melbourne Diwali?

The festival does not publish a dress code. People arrive in traditional Indian wear, contemporary festive clothing and comfortable everyday outfits. You do not need to be Indian, own a sari or buy something new to take part respectfully.

If you choose Indian clothing, wear it as clothing rather than calling it a costume. Pick a garment you understand and can wear confidently. Indian dress traditions vary widely by region, family and occasion, so no single outfit represents every Diwali celebration.

Traditional Indian outfit ideas

Festive options include a sari, lehenga, salwar suit, kurta set, kurta-pyjama or a Nehru-style jacket worn with trousers. These are examples, not rules, and each comes in many cuts, fabrics and regional styles.

For a long public festival, choose the option that lets you walk, stand and join activities without constant adjustment. If you have never draped a sari or worn a dupatta, practise at home and secure it in the way recommended for that garment. A familiar kurta or salwar suit may feel easier for a first visit, but comfort and confidence matter more than the label.

What if I do not own Indian clothing?

Wear a colourful dress, blouse, shirt, skirt, trousers or smart-casual outfit you already enjoy. Jewel tones, warm colours, embroidery or a little metallic detail can create a festive feel, but there are no compulsory Diwali colours.

One accessory can be enough: earrings, bangles, a scarf, an embroidered bag or a favourite piece of jewellery. Keep it secure and comfortable in a busy space. You never need to imitate religious clothing or combine unfamiliar cultural items simply to look more festive.

Dress for an open-sided Docklands venue

Marvel Stadium Square is undercover, so ordinary rain does not stop the celebration. It is also open-sided, and the official visitor advice recommends bringing a jumper for the evening. Check Melbourne's forecast close to the day, then use a light layer that fits over your outfit without hiding or crushing it.

Comfortable, secure shoes are the most useful choice. You may spend hours moving between the stage, cultural activities, food and market stalls. Shoes you have already worn are safer than testing a new pair at an eight-hour event. If your outfit has a long hem, make sure it clears the ground and your shoes so you can move easily through the precinct.

Practical outfit advice for children

For children, choose soft clothing that allows easy movement and simple toilet breaks. Add a labelled jumper and shoes they can comfortably wear for walking. A bright, recognisable layer can also make your child easier to spot in a crowd.

The festival is step-free and prams are welcome. If sound is difficult for anyone in your family, the official advice suggests packing ear defenders. The Melbourne Diwali family guide has more arrival and planning tips.

Your Melbourne Diwali outfit checklist

  • A traditional or everyday outfit that feels celebratory and comfortable
  • Shoes you have already worn for several hours
  • A jumper, cardigan, jacket or wrap for the open-sided evening venue
  • Secure accessories that will not need constant adjustment
  • A refillable water bottle; avoid glass bottles
  • Ear defenders if amplified music or crowd noise may be difficult

Leave alcohol, glass, fireworks, sparklers, open flames and drones at home. Read the full visitor FAQs before travelling, especially if you plan to bring something not covered here.

Plan the rest of your festival visit

Once your outfit is sorted, check the event information for transport and access. Southern Cross Station is about a five-minute walk away, and Saturday tram routes 70, 75 and 86 stop nearby.

Use the festival schedule when 2026 performance times are confirmed, and browse the stall directory as fashion, jewellery, food and artisan stalls are announced. Do not rely on buying an outfit at the festival: confirmed stall profiles are the best guide to what will actually be available.

Most importantly, wear something that lets you enjoy the people, colour, movement and music around you. Melbourne Diwali welcomes the whole community; your outfit should help you feel part of the day, not worried about getting it perfect.
